Medical student association of Latvia

The Latvian Medical Students' Association (LaMSA) is a non-governmental organization public benefit status. It is led and operated by students studying in Latvia who are future
healthcare professionals – medical, dentistry, and public health students, rehabilitation
specialists, and others.

LaMSA was founded in 2000 and has been a full member of the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA) since 2002.

LaMSA was initially established with the aim of providing students the opportunity to
familiarize themselves with healthcare systems and policies in other countries, explore various
medical fields, apply their theoretical knowledge in different projects, and acquire new practical skills.

Our Tasks:
  1. We provide international exchange opportunities outside Latvia in collaboration with the
International Federation of Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA).
  2. Throughout the year, students are given the opportunity to work on public health projects,
including health and disease prevention days, campaigns, trips to regional areas and
    schools.
  3. LaMSA gives students the chance to develop skills that make them competitive
professionals in the future – practical medical training sessions, capacity-building
opportunities provided in collaboration with IFMSA and Latvian professionals.
  4. Regularly sharing information about opportunities to attend events organized by IFMSA
    and WHO.
  5. Regularly sharing information with members about current developments in Latvia and
    worldwide.
  6. Collaborating with other associations and organizations, organizing projects, gaining
experience, and connecting with future colleagues and peers.
  7. Providing international publicity opportunities in collaboration with IFMSA, including
the chance to publish in Medical Students International and The European Sting journals.
  8. Encouraging students to take on new challenges and pursue their ideas for
    implementation.
Main Directions of Activity:
  • Promote cooperation among medical students on both local and international levels as a
    full member organization of IFMSA.
  • Organize and implement clinical practice and scientific exchange programs for medical
    students.
  • Develop and participate in projects addressing medical and social issues in Latvia and
    internationally.
  • Educate the public about reproductive health, sexually transmitted diseases, and their
    prevention.
  • Enhance medical education for students studying in Latvia.

LaMSA is one of the national member organizations of the International Federation of
Medical Students' Associations (IFMSA). Founded in 1951, the federation represents and unites
medical students globally. For over 60 years, it has been one of the largest youth organizations in
the world and is part of the World Health Organization and the United Nations. Currently, the
federation comprises 128 national medical student associations from 115 countries across six
continents, representing over 1.3 million members.
